Coronavirus Update

19 March 2020

Please see Mr Walker’s latest update below:

My goodness, what a week it has been. Thank you for your patience – I hope you are well.

I would like to update you on the following:

Year 11 and GCSE examinations

Thank you for making the efforts, where possible, of course, to send students into school today – they have been a credit to you all.  We currently have no further information on how the government intend to deal with GCSE examinations – when we do, we will talk this through with you. We will ensure that Year 11 students have all of the materials and resources they require, and issue any remaining books and resources tomorrow morning. If your child is medically fit, and it is appropriate, please ensure they attend school tomorrow. We have also made it clear that this is not Year 11’s last day at school; we will plan a final day, and the school prom, when we are able to. This information will, of course, be communicated to parents/carers and students.

School closure

Most students will be working from home from Monday. If you are a key worker, please e-mail lsalmon@penryn-college.cornwall.sch.uk to inform us that your child will be attending school from Monday. It would be really helpful if you could provide us with this information by 9.00am tomorrow. We will directly contact all parents/carers of students that the government have identified as needing to attend school after Friday. We will endeavour to make students’ experience as fun, educational, and engaging as possible, and ensure that we have a variety of learning activities available.

Free school meals

We are currently working to ensure that all eligible students will still be able access free school meals. We will confirm these arrangements tomorrow.

Books and learning resources

Work will be set on the Virtual School, and will be located in the main online work area. We are aware that parents/carers would like books students to have books at home, and we are currently working on a plan to distribute these books to all pupils; we will confirm these details tomorrow. We will begin to set work from Tuesday, as staff will be in school on Monday planning, preparing, and receiving training to make work available online.

Year 10 Work Experience

Over 150 students are nearing the end of their work experience placements; this is remarkable – congratulations to all of them. We would like these pupils to complete their placements, where possible, with the employer’s permission, of course. We would also like to congratulate all students who have had their work experience cut short, and those who have been in school from the beginning of the week – they have done a great job.

We will ensure that Year 10 pupils have access to the right resources and, crucially, all of their books, in order to make the best use of their time working from home. We will provide an opportunity for all Year 10 students, including those still on placements, to collect their books and resources. I will clarify these arrangements with you tomorrow.

Thank you for your continued patience and support. If you have any questions, have any concerns you would like to raise, please do not hesitate to contact us. I will provide an update with all of our plans tomorrow. If applicable, please do not forget to register as a key worker.
