Members of STEAM Department Make PPE for Local Community

10 May 2020

Our Head of STEAM, Mr Childs, has written a message regarding the PPE made by the department:

“These are the face shields we have made on our 3D printer. We took them from a shared CAD file and made the plastic shield from a sheet in our department.

“During the first weeks of lockdown, we gave the school’s stock of face shields – which were used for metal work and work with the lathe – to the NHS. Since then, we have had three of our face shield designs tested by the NHS, and we are now waiting to hear if larger numbers are required.

“The 3D-printed file takes a long time to print, meaning this design is not suitable for batch production. However, our simplified designs can be made in larger numbers as long as we can source the elastic.

“If there are any local care homes or other care providers that feel these may be helpful, please let us know via secretary@penryn-college.cornwall.sch.uk and we can make a batch to order.

“There are hundreds of DT departments helping support frontline workers across the country, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to help in this way.”
