Sports round up – Celebrating the sporting achievements of our students!
20 March 2017Committed Year 7s become Netball County Champions

The medal each girl received for their fantastic teamwork

Penryn College U12 team took home the trophy
We have to start this sports round-up by saying a huge congratulations to our year 7 netball team for their recent victory at the County Schools Netball Tournament.
26 schools took part in the tournament at Camborne Science and International Academy on March 10th. Truro School and Truro High School were among the stronger teams that the girls defeated on their way to overall victory. Angela Walker, PE teacher and Netball Coach, is extremely proud of their success: “It was a long day and a lot of matches, but the girls worked well together and showed a great team performance”.
It’s been an outstanding season for our youngest Netball team – last year they came 8th in the National Schools Cup after reaching the quarter finals. This year they have continued to show their strength and skill, as well as their commitment to improving by training after school every single Friday.
“Winning the tournament is a fantastic end to a very good season.”

U12 Winners of the County Schools Netball Tournament – Penryn College!
Football
Boys
This week saw the year 8 Performance squad win against Penrice on Tuesday with a 4-2 win. Thursday saw the year 7 Performance and Development squads both walk away with 3-2 wins against Mullion! The Year 8 and 9 Dev squads weren’t so lucky. Mr Holmes was extremely proud of their performances nonetheless, especially as the year 9s were up against Mullions Perf team. Luke Downing landed the goal.
Girls
Girls have had a good week winning 5-1 against St Ives in the second round of the County Cup. The year 8s also won 15-0 in their friendly!
Hockey
Against Penair, year 8 drew 2-2, year 9 and 7 lost. Players of the match were Yuki Cornwall (yr 9), Naomi Cavell (yr 8) and Ellen Dickson (yr 7) who stepped in at the last minute with some amazing goalkeeping skills.
Basketball – National Cup
Our year 9 and 10 boys gave a great performance against opposing Somerset Champions who won with 62 points – only 10 more than Penryn! The score difference was even tighter for the U14s who took on Ivy Bridge. Only 7 points separated them from the Devon champions’ final score. Staff noted the excellent performance from Sam “Frowner” Walker who scored 35 of the 50 Penryn points.
Fantastic Gymnastics!

Well done to our U16 & U19 Gymnastic teams!
Our gymnastic teams did a brilliant job in the recent South West Floor and Vault Competition.
The under 14 squad came 6th Overall and 4th in Vault. Meanwhile our under 19 squad, made up of mostly 14 year olds, had a tough competition against teams of 16-18 year olds. Despite this challenge, they scored over 14 points more than last year!
Congratulations to U19 Squad: Maisy Bennett, Ella Macandie, Emily Newton, Naomi Pixton, Jade Symonds and U14 Squad: Enya-Leigh Keogh, Madison Stanfield, Ruby Sadler, Zara Mitchell and Dora Revell.
