Christmas Poetry Competition
21 December 2024A big well done and thank you to all students who entered our Christmas Poetry Competition, and a huge congratulations to the winning pupils, whose entries you can read below.
There were some magnificent entries, and our judges had a hard task in narrowing it down to four winners.
Year 7 – Jack
(Overall winning poem)
It’s Christmas Day, and it’s a winner.
The forecast is for Christmas dinner.
Presents unwrapped, left on floors.
Snowball fights, sledding outdoors.
Turkeys bought, prepared with care,
Hungry families waiting there.
People on pavements singing carols,
Mulled wine by the barrel!
Crackers popped and wing bones broken,
Afternoon nappers to be woken.
The sun goes down, families discuss
The choice of film for all of us.
After films, all to bed,
Dreams of festivities dance through heads.
Year 8 – Zephyr
Santa Claus rides his sleigh,
Comes out at night, goes home at day.
Making people’s wishes or some would say,
He is the reason there is joy on Christmas Day.
But he is not all the smile that is shown,
It’s caused by your family; the love in your home.
It is not about getting something – it is about what you have got,
And that is so special it should never be forgot.
If you don’t have someone at home, there are people there,
Because even friends are family; they are people who care.
If you think you have nothing; that’s simply not true,
Just look to the side of you.
There is always something there, always something near,
That is why I think Christmas is beautiful, filled will joy and cheer.
It is not all about the gifts under the tree,
Because the real gift is our family.
It is about giving not receiving. It is about showing love in our homes,
And taking and sharing that love with people who are alone.
So Christmas is not about the presents under the tree,
No matter how old you are. No one is too old to believe.
Year 9 – Jordan and Sonny
When all the world is sad from fear
Nothing gives joy like Christmas cheer.
When Christmas comes round, the fight is done
And we all come together and unite as one.
As we set differences aside,
No one can remove the love inside.
As children play and shout and cheer,
We all celebrate the best time of year.
No matter what we all get,
We remember everything without regret.
As you appreciate the things you get that day,
Everyone’s sorrows, hate and fear melt away.
When the sun rises, Christmas is done
But no one cares; they still have fun
And everyone knows the answer is clear;
Everyone wishes this happens all year.
Year 9 – Adi
Now I don’t mean to break,
The gloss of warmth love and light
But perhaps consider those
who won’t get Christmas that night.
Think of those who spend Christmas
Completely alone
Those out in the cold
No lights and no home.
Those children that wrote
Prayed Father Christmas would come
But weren’t surprised when they discovered He hadn’t done.
The people whose family
Cannot be together
Even those who gave up on Christmas
Forever.
So if it does snow this Christmas,
While your outside to play
Consider the darkness
Of Christmas, that day.
