Legends Remembered in Thrilling Rugby Festival

07 November 2024

The Penryn and Redruth community celebrated the lives and legacies of two sporting legends on Thursday, as the annual Terry Pryor & Benji Thomas Rugby Festival returned to Penryn College.

Under the floodlights, students from six Penryn College teams (Year 7 Saints, Year 7 Barbarians, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11) faced Redruth School in a competitive, high-level set of fixtures – played in memory of Dave ‘Benji’ Thomas and Terry Pryor – two inspiring figures in education and sport at Penryn College and Redruth School, respectively.

Indeed, each of the matches upheld rugby’s core values of integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect – with Penryn earning the Terry Pryor & Benji Thomas Cup after winning five of the six games on the night.

Both Benji and Terry were experts in spotting less experienced rugby players at schoolboy level, who had the potential to develop into top senior rugby players. With this in mind, one player from each team was selected for the Emerging Player Award, as follows:

Year 7 Saints – Casper
Year 7 Barbarians – Luca
Year 8 – McKenzie
Year 9 – Fletcher
Year 10 – Finnian
Year 11 – Toby

A big well done to all players who took part, and a big thank you to the volunteers, referees and parents/carers, as well as staff from both schools who supported the event.
