Narrow Defeat Concludes History-Making National Cup Run

16 March 2025

Our U12 Girls’ Football team’s record-breaking National Cup run came to a heartbreaking conclusion this week following a last-minute extra-time winner from opponents Priory School, Lewes.

The girls had already made history before kick-off, having become the first-ever Penryn College side to reach the last eight of the National Cup following victories over Truro High, Camborne, Mounts Bay, Eggbuckland and Kennet School in the previous rounds.

And once again the character and determination of the squad was demonstrated in abundance in this quarter-final tie, as they came back from 2-0 down to level proceedings following two late second-half goals from Isla.

That brought the contest into extra time, and it appeared penalties would be required to determine the winner; however, the visitors’ last-gasp goal made it 2-3, breaking the hearts of Penryn’s players, supporters and staff alike.

Reflecting on the squad’s amazing journey, the PE team said: “The girls should be immensely proud of making history as the first Penryn College team to reach this stage of the prestigious competition.

“Their journey has created countless magical, unforgettable moments, and the entire school is incredibly proud of their achievement and the way they’ve carried themselves throughout.

“Well done, our history-makers. We are so proud of you.”
