Penryn College Year 10’s Crowned County Champions…. Again!
25 April 2017They say it takes true champions to retain a trophy they already hold and Penryn’s Year 10’s did exactly that after beating Newquay Treviglas in the County Final at St Blazey FC. Having won the trophy last season, the team had been on a mission to reclaim the crown, already having beaten Truro School, Pool, Redruth and Richard Lander ahead of Thursday’s final.
The team started in confident manner, and set the tone for a dominant first half straight from kick off with skipper Harrison Jewell powering forward and testing the Newquay keeper within the first 10 seconds. And it didn’t take long for the champions to take the lead; the ever industrious Sam Pickup collecting a short free kick, beating several tackles before curling a stunning effort into the top corner. Soon Penryn doubled their lead, with good work down the right finding Ketan Cooper who powered a right footed effort into the roof of the net.
Penryn could, and probably should, have extended their lead in the first half but couldn’t add to their tally thanks to some stout defending from the Newquay side. The second half was much more even, with Newquay enjoying a lot more of the ball albeit rarely troubling George Middlewick in the Penryn goal. The second half didn’t reach the heights of the first, but the final whistle was met with much excitement as Penryn retained their title as County Schools champions. All that was left was for Jewell to raise the trophy and the team to celebrate another famous victory.
Penryn’s Year 9’s have their County Final against Callington on Tuesday 25th April (5pm KO at Wadebridge FC) which could complete a stunning treble for the school, ensuring they would be County champions at Year 9, 10 and 11 – a feat never achieved before in Cornwall Schools history.
