21 May 2019

Eight Penryn College pupils have been rewarded by the University of Exeter for their contributions to their school, community, and for their academic achievements, as part of the university’s annual Excellence Awards.

Year 8 pupils Sophia, Freddie, Ocean and Libby, and Year 10 students Saffron, Jowan, Oscar and Rosie, all took to the stage at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus earlier this month, as they received a range of awards in front of an audience consisting of local mayors and dignitaries, senior members of the university’s staff, parents, and teachers.

Sophia, Freddie, Oscar and Rosie were presented with Positive Contribution Awards for their contributions to Penryn College and the local community, while Saffron, Jowan, Libby and Ocean were awarded Academic Achievement Awards for their in-school achievements.

Sophia was recognised for her fundraising work with the school’s charity – Cornwall Air Ambulance – while playing a huge part in helping provide the Trussell Trust with over 60 boxes of food during the Christmas period. Freddie received the award for his fantastic leadership skills in PE and Lifestyle lessons, along with his empathy and endeavour to help others perform to the best of their abilities. Oscar was recognised for his outstanding sporting achievements in kayaking – having competed in a number of national competitions, ranking in the top three junior paddlers in the UK. And Rosie won an award for competing fantastically well in a range of disciplines – notably displaying her determination and leadership skills while captaining the school’s Ten Tors team.

Meanwhile, Saffron, Jowan, Libby and Ocean were recognised for their outstanding work ethic, determination, and subsequent academic progress during their time at Penryn College.

Reflecting on the students’ achievements, Penryn College Assistant Head, Mr Harvey, said: “The school is very proud of the determination, work ethic, and achievements of our students here at Penryn College, and it’s fantastic to see the pupils receive recognition for their achievements both in and outside of the school.

“The University of Exeter do fantastically well to stage the awards and recognise the efforts of students in local schools – helping encourage individuals to demonstrate qualities that will help them develop throughout their lives.”

The University of Exeter’s Excellence Awards this year recognised the excellence of local children who are currently enrolled at Penryn College, Helston Community College, Mullion School, Redruth School, Camborne Science & International Academy, Falmouth School, and Pool Academy.
