Pupils Complete DofE Bronze Expedition!

09 June 2025

Two days of teamwork, dedication, and togetherness saw 95 of our students complete the 15-mile Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award Expedition in May!

Check out Mr Penhaligon’s (Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Manager) report on the expedition below!

Mr Penhaligon’s Report

Over the course of the two days, our students completed the 15-mile route while carrying all of their equipment and camping out for one night. We are delighted that every student finished their expedition and passed this section of their Award. We now have nine pupils who have completed Bronze Awards this year, and we look forward to the other pupils getting their other sections completed to add to this number.

Our current Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze cohort has been the biggest we have ever had at Penryn College, which goes to show how much they enjoy a challenge. It was fantastic for the 12 members of staff who were meeting them at checkpoints and at the campsite to witness the teamwork on display.

There were lots of happy faces as students set off from Penryn College on Saturday. They managed to keep up their spirits as the hot weather began to take its toll by singing and playing the kazoo! As expected, there were some challenges along the way, but our students were excellent in how they dealt with them. We were especially impressed by some of the food they cooked for dinner and breakfast, as well as the energy they had in reserve to organise and play a game of football at the campsite!

A big thank you to the parents/carers for supporting their children with this award and to the staff for giving up their weekends to make this expedition possible. Students who complete their Bronze Award in Year 9 will have the opportunity to take part in the Silver Award in Year 10. For those who relish a challenge with their hiking, we have a limited number of spaces available for the Ten Tors event on Dartmoor in Year 10.
