Rugby Team Crowned U16 County Cup Champions

15 January 2025

Our 1st XV Rugby players were crowned joint U16 County Cup champions on Wednesday evening following a pulsating 17-17 draw with Newquay Tretherras at Hayle RFC.

In a breathless encounter which saw the pendulum swing between both sides throughout, Penryn trailed 5-12 at half-time following a tough first half in which the boys’ advantage in the scrum was key, and saw Isaac score a try.

Heading into the second half, Penryn’s replacement front rows maintained the supremacy at the scrum, providing a platform for the backs to work the ball to the flank, where Eddy crashed over the line in the corner.

And as Newquay struggled to exit from the lower end of the pitch, just as Penryn had in the first half, Alex powered over the line to put the boys ahead for the first time in the match. Elijah converted to extend the lead.

A spell of resilient defending from Penryn eventually ended when Newquay found some space on the outside to level the score at 17-17.

And that set up a thrilling final 10 minutes, with Tretherras putting in some outstanding tackles to prevent the boys from scoring on several occasions, as the memorable encounter came to a close.

Following the match, Mr Nancarrow said: “Both teams can take great pride in the exceptional display of Cornish schoolboy rugby they showcased, as well as their commendable conduct both during and after the match.

“A big thank you to Hayle RFC for hosting. We will be back next week for the U15 County Cup final, where we will face Redruth.”
