Rugby Teams Taste Early-Season Tournament Success
16 October 2019It’s been a successful month for Penryn College’s Rugby teams – with both the Year 11 and Year 8 squads clinching tournament trophies.
Kicking off October in style, the Year 11 team lifted the 10-a-side County Tournament trophy at Newquay Sports Centre, following a run of fantastic performances in the one-day competition.
Group stage victories over Penrice Academy, Penair School, Newquay Tretherras, and Richard Lander School meant Penryn progressed to the knockout stages of the tournament as winners of their pool, setting up a semi-final clash with Redruth School.
And after registering four tries to Redruth’s one in the semi-final tie, Penryn produced a show-stopping 31-0 win over Truro School in the final.
Following in the footsteps of the Year 11 team, the school’s Year 8 side finished top of their pool on the way to winning the Plate Tournament at Penrice Academy.
Competing in a group consisting of Mounts Bay Academy, Hayle Academy, Fowey River Academy, and Looe Community Academy – Penryn’s 13-man squad demonstrated some fantastic play to ensure progression to the semi-finals, where they defeated Mounts Bay.
That semi-final victory set up a mouth-watering final against Falmouth School, and Penryn ran out the eventual winners, registering two tries without reply, to secure the College’s second rugby tournament trophy in as many weeks.
Reflecting on the Rugby teams’ recent success, Penryn College Head of PE, Mr Tucker, said: “It’s been fantastic to see the progress that players across all year groups have made following their hard work in training.”
