Sophia Clinches First Place in Rotary Young Chef District Final

17 February 2020

Year 8 student, Sophia, secured a fantastic first-place finish in the Rotary South West Peninsula Young Chef District Final over the weekend.

Sophia fought off competition from some of the finest young chefs in Cornwall and Devon to impress judges in what was a closely-fought contest – with just four marks separating first and fourth place.

The competition, which took place at Dawlish College, required competitors to prepare and cook a three-course meal for two, with a budget of Β£20.00 for ingredients. Sophia’s menu consisted of roasted red peppers, grilled wild sea bass, and a mango and raspberry soufflΓ©.

Reflecting on her culinary success, Sophia said: “I felt excited, happy, and overjoyed when I found out that I had won the competition.

“Mrs Knowles [Head of Food Technology at Penryn College] encouraged me to enter these competitions and has supported me throughout. She has taught me a lot about presentation, flavours, and skills, as well as kitchen tidiness and adding extra professional touches to my dishes.”

Sophia’s Rotary Young Chef District Final success booked her a place in the Regional Final, which was due to take place at Havant & South Downs College on Saturday 28 March. Unfortunately, however, the competition was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A huge well done to Sophia for her fantastic efforts!
