Sports Round-Up – 15-28 April

30 April 2024

What a fantastic start to the Summer Term it’s been for our sports teams, with huge participation and fantastic performances!

Check out the highlights from this term so far in our Sports Summary!

Basketball

Year 7 Jr. NBA Regional Semi-Final v Lipson Academy (H)

The opening week of the term saw our Year 7 Jr. NBA side reach the Regional Finals of the competition following a fantastic victory over Plymouth-based Lipson Academy.

Each and every player made valuable contributions during the game, making for a brilliant team performance and a memorable victory!

The pupils are yet to find out their opponents for the next round, but they do know the prize that awaits should they record a victory: a spot in the Jnr. NBA Final Fours in Bristol.

Year 8 Jr. NBA Regional Semi-Final v Newton Abbot (H)

Starting the term in style and following in the footsteps of our Year 7s, our Year 8 Jr. NBA team secured a place in the Regional Finals after an impressive victory against Newton Abbot College.

Yet again, Penryn’s togetherness inspired the victory, and the reward for the squad is a clash against Beaminster School, as both sides look to book a place in the Jnr. NBA Final Fours.

Cricket

U15 Girls’ Regional Indoor Cricket Competition at UWE Bristol

Our U15 Girls’ Cricket team travelled to Bristol to represent both Cornwall and Penryn College in the Regional Indoor Cricket Finals last week.

The girls secured qualification for the tournament after lifting the County Indoor title last term, and once again produced a series of fine performances against some of the top sides in the South West, recording the following results:

Penryn 116 – 65 Cathedral
Penryn 95 – 99 Taunton
Penryn 76 – 85 Canford
Penryn 68 – 100 Plymouth

Following the tournament, Mr Bidgood was full of praise for the squad. He said: “The girls were absolutely brilliant and produced some of the best cricket I have ever seen them play.”

Well done, girls!

U13 Outdoor Cricket v Truro School (H)

Last week saw the outdoor cricket season begin with our U13 team facing Truro School in a friendly fixture.

Both teams played their part in a great match that saw four of our Year 7 pupils involved.

Player of the Match was Year 8 student Jack A, who batted and bowled very well throughout the encounter.

Football

U13 Boys’ County Cup Final v Budehaven School at Blaise Park

The U13 Boys’ Football team’s fantastic journey to the final of the County Cup ended in a narrow 2-0 defeat to Budehaven School last week.

Two goals at the end of each half secured the victory for Penryn’s opponents in what was a closely fought encounter and one of very few chances thanks to some excellent defending from both teams.

Big congratulations to Bude on becoming County Cup champions, and a big well done to the Penryn squad following a wonderful season, which saw over 50 Year 8 boys represent the school in fixtures.

Thank you to St Blazey AFC for hosting the match and to the match officials on the day.

Cross Country

Polwhele House Cross Country Event

Nine Penryn College athletes took part in the Polwhele House Cross Country event over the weekend – producing a range of fantastic performances.

Matilda placed second in the U13 Girls’ race, with Elizabeth just behind in sixth. In the Boys’ race, Matty, having finished in first place last year, successfully defended his title by holding off some strong runners from Newquay Tretherras.

Meanwhile, Robson, Arlo and Toby all managed top 10 finishes, with the fast finishing Zach placing 11th, just ahead of Elliot and Ethan.

Massive thanks to Mr Elworthy of Polwhele for hosting this fantastic event, to all the parents for their support, and to our Year 10 Sports Leader, Sam, for warming up the athletes and offering his expertise.
