Sports Round-Up – 27 January – 9 February

07 February 2025

As well as our footballing success, it’s been a fantastic, all-action two weeks for our other sports teams!

Check out the highlights below!

Basketball

Jr. NBA County Finals

Our Year 7 Basketball team were crowned Cornwall Jr. NBA champions this week following their success in the second round of the County Championships!

After victories against Poltair and Penrice, the squad faced Treviglas Academy in a what was a hard-fought contest, with Penryn securing a narrow victory.

The boys can now look forward to the play-offs which will take place in the coming weeks.

U14 County Final

Our U14 Basketball team suffered a narrow defeat in last week’s enthralling County Basketball final against Treviglas Academy.

Both teams demonstrated their skill and teamwork throughout the encounter, with the scoreboard reading 54-52 in Treviglas’ favour as the full-time buzzer sounded.

Netball

U13 Regional Qualifiers

Our U13 netballers won seven out of their seven games in the South West Regional State School Qualifiers this week, booking themselves a spot in the Regional Finals in March!

Following the match, our PE team commented: “We are so proud of your hard work, determination and resilience!”

U16 & U14 Regional Finals

After their fantastic success in their respective County competitions, our U16 and U14 Netball teams travelled to Bournemouth to represent Cornwall in the National Schools Regional Tournament over the weekend.

Facing the top 14 schools in the South West, both Penryn College teams competed in every match and demonstrated moments of absolute genius throughout the day.

Hockey

Our U14 Boys’ Hockey team finished as runners-up in last week’s County Hockey Tournament, booking a spot in the West of England Regional Hockey Tournament!

The squad registered wins against Penair and Richard Lander, before a loss to a strong Truro team, a 0-0 draw against Bude, and a victory over Mounts Bay in the final game of the day.

Cross Country

A number of our athletes represented the Cornwall Schools Cross Country team at the South West Schools finals over the weekend!

All of our students gave their all and did themselves, the county and Penryn College proud.

In the Year 10/11 Boys’ race, Josh and Zephrin both placed inside the top 25, finishing 2nd and 4th out of the Cornish athletes.

Matty, Ed and Arlo battled tough conditions in the Year 8/9 Boys’ race, competing fantastically well.

Elizabeth and Matilda were super impressive in the Year 8/9 Girls’ race, with Elizabeth the second Cornish runner to cross the line.

Year 7 pupils Jimmy and Sam placed 5th and 10th in the Minor Boys’ race, with Jack closely following. The three boys contributed to Cornwall finishing third as a team in this age category.

Rugby

This week saw our U14 Rugby team compete in the Eric Blackman South West State Schools festival at Millfield School!

The boys went undefeated in their pool, which set up an all-Cornish play-off clash with Penair in the final game of the tournament.

Despite Penryn seeing a lot of the ball, it was Penair who came out on top. And it was still all-smiles after the full-time whistle, before both sets of players enjoyed the bus ride home together!
