Students Take Part in Cornwall Youth Council Voting

27 February 2024

Classrooms turned into polling stations this week as our students voted candidates to represent the Truro/Falmouth Constituency for the Cornwall Youth Council.

The Cornwall Youth Council consists of a group of 24 young people who aim to empower children and young people in local communities, advocating for their needs and views.

They meet twice a month as sub-committees, and quarterly as a full council, where they link with decision makers and councillors.

Indeed, our pupils had the opportunity to read the manifestos of five individuals before voting for who they thought represented their views and interests the most.

Additionally, as part of ‘Make Your Mark’ – the largest consultation of 11-18 year olds in Europe – students voted for a current topic/issue which matters most to them.

The three topics with the most votes will become the newly-elected Youth Parliament’s campaign themes for their two-year term.

Well done to all students for taking part. It was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to gain an insight into democracy.
