29 March 2019

The Year 9 Football squad reached the County Schools final on Thursday afternoon, following a 2-1 home semi-final victory over Richard Lander School.

Two first-half goals from Connor Hurrell booked Penryn’s spot in the final, which will be played at Burngullow Park – the home of South West Peninsula League Premier Division side Sticker AFC – on Thursday 25 April.

Penryn started the encounter brightly, with Hurrell, Ross Dunstan, and Oliver Pickup creating chances within the first five minutes of play. At the other end of the field – following a period of pressure from Richard Lander – Sean Fry and Morgan Blackwell demonstrated their defensive prowess, along with Lewis Smith, who displayed his goalkeeping qualities.

But with 15 minutes on the clock, Penryn took the lead following a fantastic counter-attacking move. Smith delivered a fantastic ball out to Dunstan on the right, who beat the opposition full-back and delivered a cross towards Hurrell, and he nodded over the advancing ‘keeper to make it 1-0.

After a sustained period of pressure, Penryn doubled their lead from the penalty spot. Pickup delivered a wonderful through-ball to Hurrell, and his quick turn forced a foul from the opposition defender – subsequently, Hurrell stepped up and slotted home to make it 2-0, with 25 minutes on the clock.

For a large part of the second half, Penryn sat slightly deeper, with the back line of John Leach, Oliver Perrow, Fry, and Blackwell absorbing the Richard Lander pressure.

But with five minutes of the encounter remaining, Hurrell and Pickup combined fantastically well to provide Oscar Green with an opportunity, which he converted, but the goal was disallowed.

Richard Lander pulled a goal back late on, but Penryn showed their resilience and recorded a memorable victory – as each and every player held their arms aloft come the final whistle.

A huge well done to all of the boys for their fantastic achievements, who, additionally, have collectively worked together to help raise money for their new kit!
